How to Book a Canal Boat Holiday

Do I need to have experience?

No, Training will be given upon your arrival at the marina. Full instructions on how to handle the boat, how to do daily safety checks and how to keep safe will all be given at the training. A minimum of two adults must attend the training.

An instruction manual and safety DVD are on board all boats, as are buoyancy aids, a life belt and a basic first aid kit.

If you're not sure of something, please do not hesitate to ask.

How will I know which way I should be going?

Detailed maps and guides are available to help you plan your route. On many routes you will see 'signposts', which will help you, but your route will also be on a map. At a junction, where two canals meet, it will be clearly signposted.

You can buy canal maps for your route, either at the marina, or online here.

Can I moor anywhere?

Yes, unless it says 'no mooring', or at private moorings. You should make sure it is safe to moor at your chosen spot, on the tow-path side, but on the whole, unless stated otherwise it is up to you. Avoid locks and weirs and you should be ok. Mooring pegs or pins are provided for you when there are no mooring points.

I don't feel confident with locks. Are there any routes where there are none?

Yes. If you look on the website, canalboatholiday.com, and click on 'Cruising Routes', you will be able to search for routes which are lock-free.

Can I take my dog?

Yes, but do remember that there may be a charge for pets (see booking form) you take, so don't forget to fill it in on the form. The maximum amount allowed is two, although some marinas will allow three. The pet can be a dog, cat or parrot. You must supply your own bedding (or cage) for them, and they must be kept off the furniture at all times.

Is it safe for children?

Yes, a boating holiday is ideal for children. The whole family will enjoy seeing somewhere new every day, and there is plenty to see and do along the way. You won't be hearing them say 'I'm bored' on a boating holiday!

Life jackets are provided free for all children (and adults) at the marina's. They are compulsory for all children and non-swimmers.

What about heating?

All of our boats have radiators fitted throughout the boat.

What is covered by insurance?

Everything except your car and personal possessions. Please check your own policies before your holiday.

Is there a shower in the boat or do I have to go ashore?

There is hot and cold running water on the boat, and there is a shower. Toilets have modern fresh water flushes and are pumped out at the marina after your trip. However, on longer trips or in exceptional circumstances, they can be pumped out during your stay, at a boatyard. This will incur a small fee.

Where can I leave my car, and will it be safe?

Free car parking is provided at all of our locations. Some marina's lock the car park at night, and you will be provided with a key for it if this is the case.

Is there a limit to how long I can cruise in a day?

Providing it is daylight, you can cruise. You are not permitted to cruise at night.

What if I run out of diesel?

You can fill up at any marina or boatyard, at your own cost, however, it is unlikely you would run out.

What about provisions and eating out?

Canal boating is ideal for eating out, as you pass many lovely pubs and restaurants along the way, with places to moor.

You can bring provisions with you, buy some at the small shop at the marina, or buy some when you moor up to go exploring the pretty towns and villages along your route. You will also find ATM's, launderettes and numerous other local amenities, should you need them.

What if there is an emergency?

There will be someone on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Your safety and enjoyment is paramount and we will do all we can to help.

Can I go fishing?

Yes, but you will need to purchase a Rod Licence. These are available for one day, eight days or annually, from the Post Office. Alternatively, you can buy one online at www.environment-agency.gov.uk. Do check for any signs saying 'Private Fishing', and do not fish near overhead wires or other canal users.

What do I need to take with me?

Other than sensible outdoor clothes and non-slip shoes, wet-weather clothes are recommended. Also, a torch, camera, binoculars, CD's and DVD's. If you've not brought many provisions, you may want to buy some tea, coffee and milk before you set off.

If you are taking children, a few board games to occupy them in the event of rain would be a good idea.

Can I take my bicycle?

Unless the marina doesn't allow bicycles, then yes, you can take them (see booking form for details). However, space is limited so you would have to put them on the roof. You will need to bring some old matting to put them on and something to secure them with so that they don't get stolen. On a 4 berth boat the maximum recommended is two bicycles and on a 6 berth it is four.

Hiring a bicycle may be an easier option if you like cycling but don't want the hassle of taking your own.

How fast does the boat go?

The speed limit is 4mph on the canals, but the average is nearer 3mph. You must pass other boat users as slowly as possible because the wash caused from the bow wave moves other boats. Canal banks can be eroded by the bow waves.

How do I turn around?

At intervals along the canal there are turning points, or 'winding holes', and you can turn here.

What about fresh water?

Water is stored in tanks on the boat but you may have to fill up during your holiday. British Waterways provide water points en route, which are clearly marked. You will have been given a key so that you can access these water points to fill the tanks. It is recommended that before drinking this water, you boil it, or buy bottled water.

Any water you use for showering or washing up, is discharged into the canal, so do think responsibly when using detergents.

Will I feel seasick?

You shouldn't do, but some people do if they are prone to motion sickness. Movement in the boat, or maybe another boat passing can cause your boat to move, but only gently. For the majority of people this is not a problem.
